Con Dao prison
Con Dao is known as a brutal place, a training environment of patriotic solders against French colonialism and old Saigon regime. Visiting and studying a past period of Vietnamese nation, tourists will feel the life in Con Son hell on earth that is considered as a spiritual experience to gratitude deeply for national heroes sacrificed and stayed on this holy land.
At 02.00 p.m begin the itinerary of Con Dao history exploration, the sights:
  • Con Dao historical museum: Island Lord’s house passing through periods, is currently displayed Con Dao historical relics
  • Historical pier no. 914: where more than 914 prisoners sacrificed in slave labor in that area.
  • Phu Hai and Phu Son prison: the first prison in Con Dao.
  • French and American tiger cages and isolated cow shed relic (torture tunnel): where happened the most brutal tortures.
  • Hang Duong cemetery: visit the tombs of Heroes Vo Thi Sau, Comrade Le Hong Phong, Great grandfather Nguyen An Ninh and 1913 other tombs
  • Mrs. Phi Yen temple: is the resting place of Mrs. Hoang Phi Yen, the royal concubine of Nguyen Lord.
Dam Trau beach
Dam Bau beach is a very beautiful beach with fine sand bank stretching longly under many shapes cliffs. On one rockyslope reaching out to the sea, there are outstanding with two huge rocks which bunched their heads together as a couple of bird loving, taking care for each other, forgeting the flow of time.
At 02.00 p.m begin the exploration itinerary of Dam Trau beach – Con Dao and the tomb and temple of Cai prince – a son of Hoang Phi Yen, was built in 1783. Go through the forest nearly 1km to come with Dam Bau beach where is always fresh with blooming water spinach flower, the lush plants trying to stretch, full of vitality next to large and solid boulders created by the nature with many living shapes, etc.
Dam Trau is the best beautiful beach of the Con Dao and its charm is attached to the safety of tourists because the waves in there are very gentle for free swimming, building sand castles, playing soccer, swimming, etc.
Bay Canh Islet
Located to the East of Con Son island with area of 683 hectares. The whole island is covered by rainforest with wildlife distribution of endemic, rare spicies such as ebony squirrel, Con Dao black squirrel, lizards, pythons, snakes, some seabird species …
Mangrove forest on this island is primative grown on dead coral and sand. Although the area is not large (about 5.1 ha) but the existence of mangrove ecosystems have contributed perfect linkage between ecosystems, such as: tropical forest, mangrove forest, seagrass beds and coral reefs. Bay Canh area was planned for ecological recovery and no take zone.
Marine resources around Bay Canh have high biodiversity, with many species of marine life such as coral reefs with diverse species composition, mussels, oysters, sea cucumbers, fish live in coral reefs, sea turtles, sea grass, seaweed…. All should be planned as no take zone and ecological recovery which serve natural conservation.
Cat Lon beach on this island is one of 14 turtles’ breeding grounds and Con Dao is the place has the most sea turtles lay eggs. During the breeding season (from April to September yearly), at least 1-2 turtles come to nest, some nights there from 20-30 turtles.
Lighthouse in the north-east of the island was built by the French in 1884 until now still working, guiding sailing in the area. Tourists walk along the mountain trail to the lighthouse can see the scenery and the majestic sky and sea in Con Dao.
Ong Dung Rocky beach
This is a fascinating destination located on Con Son Island, about 3 km from Visitors center to the West. It has beautiful natural scenery, pristine, pure environment. It takes about 1 hour for walking on the trail through the forest from Park visitors center to Ong Dung beach.
From Ong Dung beach, visitors can rent speedboat at the Ranger Station to visit some places nearby Tre Lon island, Tre Nho island, sightseeing, swimming, bird watching, corals view .
Con Dao center overview from So Ray
So Ray is located on the main island at 260m height. From Park visitors center take the trail along the mountains to Vung 3, then continue climbing the trail to So Ray. So Ray is a flat area approximately 20 ha was formed in French colonial period to exile prisoners reclamation, cultivation of crops in the early 20th century .
In 2002, the Management Board of Con Dao National Park was planted as reforestation program to restore the status of forest which was damaged after Linda Typhoon in 1997. This program helps to preserve precious genetic resources, rare species and planting native tree enriches natural food, attract wild animals, scientific research, education and advocacy of ecotourism tours.
Joining to So Ray walking tour, explore rainforest, observing wild animals like birds, Black Squirrel, Con Dao long-tailed monkeys, geckos…, old stone houses were built by prisoners in French colonial period and to observe Con Dao town from the tower, the largest natural freshwater lake of the island, Con Son Bay and the surrounding islands. Then visitors continue to walk down the mountain to visit Ong Dung beach, swimming, coral viewing, have lunch and return to the center in the afternoon.
Tai Island is located in Southeast of Con Son island, with an area of 34 hectares, from Con Dao pier 5.3 km and about 1km from Shark Cape. Hon Tai has beautiful natural landscapes, attractive to visit, go sightseeing and explore nature.
Tai island has two small white sandy beaches where hundreds of mother turtles to nest and lay eggs Thanks and have thousands of baby turtles return to the ocean annually (from April to September). Marine resources around are rich and diverse with many of marine organisms species, such as: corals, fish, giant clams, sea turtles, … On Tai Islet, tourists will admire the beauty of sparkling mysterious aquarium with many species of colorful, exotic coral which are hard to see anywhere else.
Go to Tai Islet, tourists can see ebony squirrels – the endemic squirrel which has in Con Dao, varans, geckos, etc. and many sea birds, the white bird – a rare and valuable kind belonging to dove family, the red face monkey – the rare kind which has been nourishing in the Tai Islet.
Dam Tre Bay
Dam Tre Bay is located in the North of the main island, 3km from Con Son Airport. This bay is large, deep-rooted in the land, the harmonious combination between the sea and mountains, giving a poetic, charming scenic bay and fresh environment.
Here is rich biodiversity of a tropical sea with mangrove forest, sea grass, coral reefs and marine space that planned no take zone.
From near Con Son airport, visitors will walk on one of six the best long beautiful beaches in Con Dao which names Bai Vong, located in the North East of Con Son island. At the end of coastline, visitors take a bit of rest to continue the tropical forest exploration
Visitors walk through the Horse mountain with 166m at the top. On the way visitors can see some wild animals and rare flora species; exploring two kinds of typical forest in Con Dao: evergreen rain tropical forests and moist semi-deciduous rain tropical forest.
At Dam Tre bay, visitors go snorkeling to see coral, clams, reef fish, mangrove exploring, birds nest watching during their breeding season; make a view to Dam Tre bay from high mountain and take photographs. Dam Tre Bay has an area of 132 hectares, 16km from the town, and located in north-east of Con Son island. Here is a large bay, sheltered by mangrove forest surrounded and caves for bird nests at the mouth of bay. Then visitor will find why this bay was named Dam Tre bay (Bamboo bay)
Having a quite night on the beach to see turtle laying eggs during the matting season and watching tank crabs finding food in mangrove forest are an interesting activity. You will undoubtably be pleased with photos taken at sunrise.
